Expanded Preface
I mention in the Preface of the novel that “what Daniel says in the book about that time” is acurate concerning the atrocities commited by Cushan-rishathaim. Then I make a statement about these types of atrocities continuing at least through the Assyrian Empire. I believe Cushan-rishathaim came from the country of Mitanni, which is north of Assyria. Mittani may have been the home country of the immigrant Hurrians, which may be one of the people in the bible known as Horites. Cruelty was not new, but these guys seem to have stepped it up a notch. They had taken the Assyrian homeland, which is east of the Tigris River in northeastern Iraq and northwestern Iran today. They aslo had taken Paddan Aram (also known as Akkad) and struck south into old Sumer. At that time they swept into western Syria and down the coast into the lower Levant, which is Israel. They did not control this area long, and did not control it consistantly. When their armies were there, they were in control, so they plundered extensively. I believe Assyria learned its excessive creulty from this group at this time. Later the Hittites destroyed Mitanni power and that allowed Assyria to regain its independence. I will not go into depth about the cruelty of those times, not even on this page. If you are needing to research that, I will let you do that on your own, as there is no need to give any more than what the story tells. I allow Daniel to talk about that in the story to show what God does to people who are called by His name who will not do what He wants nor serve Him as He requires. See Micah 6:8. I go into one of the horrific practices of idol worship for that reason as well, and also for other reasons. I want to write a study guide for this book, and will do so as God permits.
